Black History Month – October 2020

Our classes have all been busy learning about Black History this month and looking at influential black figures of past and present. These include the inspirational Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

Some children have studied the wonderful life of scientist Maggie Aderin and Pocock in Literacy. Whilst others have been learning about abstract artist Alma Woodsey Thomas and have completed paintings inspired by her art work. Freedom quilts have been designed and made by year 3, who have learnt about the significance of these amazing tapestries.

Year 6 have been learning about the huge importance of the Windrush Generation and how people from the Caribbean had a huge impact on rebuilding Britain after World War 2.

The themes of Benjamin Zephaniah poetry, Talking Turkeys , Dis poem and Nature’s Trail, have been explored such as vegetarianism, global issues, animal cruelty which are shared with a rich humour, drawing on rap and dub rhythms.

Year 4 pupils have been inspired by the work of the artist Chuck Close. They have been busy working together to create a large scale portrait of a famous black athlete.

We really hope you enjoy looking at some of the wonderful work produced by all the years across the school.
