Ice

How can I manipulate the properties of ice?

Experiment 1- Rescuing a trapped toy!

You will need:

  • A container
  • A toy

Instructions:

  1. Fill your container with water and pop your toy in
  2. Set it overnight
  3. Work out how to rescue your toy

Next steps:

How can you get your toy back? Can you heat it up? Where is somewhere warm in your house? Could you smash the ice with a tool? What is the fastest way to save your toy?

Experiment 2- Making Frozen Treats!

You will need:

  • Ziplock bags
  • Yoghurt or cream
  • Ice cubes
  • Something to sweeten it up like fruit

Instructions:

  1. Add the yoghurt and sweetener into a ziplock back and seal it tightly
  2. Place this inside another bag which contains ice and salt
  3. Shake the bag and leave it to set for a few minutes
  4. Enjoy!

Next steps:

How does this reaction work? How does the yoghurt freeze so quickly? Would this work as well if we didn’t use salt? Which flavour is the best and why?
